You have to press the button. Since there's no "On" position you
can't even
connect a timer switch to turn on the electricity: it won't start
unless you
press the Power button.
However, there is a built-in mechanism to start the computer at a
given time of day, and on specified days (weekdays, weekends, or one
specific day) of the week. But it can wake the computer only once a
day using this mechanism.
So, a script could be written to shut the computer down at a specific
time, setting the wake-up time before shutting it down; the script
could be made a startup item, and reset the next shut down and wake
up times when it is run.
Unfortunately, until system preferences are scriptable, this could be
done only by using GUI scripting, if at all.
