As of 10.4, there is: perversely enough, it's "path to frontmost
application". (All right, that really gives you a reference to the
application file. Getting the name from this is left as an exercise
for the reader.) System Events was not updated to use the newer (and
generally more useful) API, but there's a bug filed on that.
