Set monitor resolution/depth

  • Subject: Set monitor resolution/depth

Is there an applescript way (or shell) to set the monitor resolution/depth, preferably to 256 colors and then back to millions?

Some earlier educational software require 256 colors but their programmers fell asleep when they were supposed to automatically set the resolution like every other good software does. I've killed preference pane access to students. (as if a 1st grader could set monitor colors before launching Word Munchers) I've also turned on the monitor menu with the intent of leaving 3 previous modes in the menu, pre-populating them with 256color options before imaging/casting the computer across campus. As my luck had it, those must be some byhost settings that get lost across the build.

Thanks!
