When trying to get the content of a message (get content of
theEmail), instead of getting the text of the message, I get
"?" . I have notice in the archives that others have had this
problem, but no solution was presented.
I would greatly appreciate some help into this puzzle. Mail
1.3.11 and OS X 1.3.9.
It's a bug associated with HTML message content. (Possibly with
*only* HTML content.) Looking at the bug report, I don't see any
workaround mentioned, though I suppose that if you were
sufficiently ambitious you could try to parse the message source.

Thanks for confirming this as a bug. If someone has such parsing
code, I'ld appreciate it.
I wrote a Perl script which does a pretty good job at parsing HTML
and text/enriched messages and producing either plain text or richt
text (RTFD) output. It relies on some CPAN packages not included in
MacOS by default but they all compile just fine.
You can get the script by downloading the source of "Mail Scripts"
from my home page:

P.S.: Bear with me, this is my first ever Perl script :-)
