'Notification' is a great word here, and suggests the need in AS for
something just like that:  a notify command.  It's quite a different meaning
than 'dialog(ue)'.  (And I know it's not exactly related to Daniel's
original question.)

If you haven't tried 'Growl', you haven't experienced a whole new world of
notifying the user about "things".

Growl notifications are flexible, user-controllable, scriptable and
stackable (meaning, they literally stack themselves if there are more than
one...try that with 'display dialog' ;)

Alternatively, if Smile is your development/execution environment, there are
some additional user interaction features available: 'postit' being a very
useful one for notifications.
