I get the exact same as you.  I'm on a PowerMac Dual G5 2.0GHz, 10.4.2.

I suspect it's a hard-coded constant in AppleScript.  See the comments, for instance, in these release notes:

http://developer.apple.com/ReleaseNotes/AppleScript/AppleScript.html

Search on "internal runtime stack".  The people who are reporting different values are probably running an earlier version of Mac OS X.  Have you heard anybody report a higher value than 504?
