Good question.  Standard Additions has no problem with it.

set myName to "john" -- your short user name
set x to alias ((path to users folder as text) & myName & ":.Trash")
set y to size of (info for x)

How come the Finder only returns "missing value" for the physical size of the trash, even though there's stuff in it?
