Why not kick around the idea of a date formatting command, so that you
'neers can make dates however you would like, and we meers can format and
manipulate them however we'd like?

Oh, that's been kicked around too, but it's orthogonal to what you asked about. One side of the problem is "I know a date, and I want to write it in my script", and the other side is "I got a date from somewhere, and I want to write it out." They're both important.
