Why not kick around the idea of a date formatting command, so that you

Oh, that's been kicked around too, but it's orthogonal to what you
asked about. One side of the problem is "I know a date, and I want
to write it in my script", and the other side is "I got a date from
somewhere, and I want to write it out." They're both important.
