No disagreements there: there's a list of "basic AppleScript features and commands that Apple ought to supply as standard but doesn't" that's as long as my arm. I doubt we'll ever see most of them though (not in AS 1.x anyway). All you can really do is file the relevant feature requests (and ask everyone else to request them too), and make do with 'do shell script' workarounds and third-party solutions in the meantime.
