Is there still no way to do this??

if i try

get original of file <alias>

it doesn't work if the alias is to something that isn't mounted yet.
I could double click the file in finder no problem and it would mount...

I think the short answer is No. The only similar request (for Finder) outstanding in Radar is #2435422, asking for a way to get the "path" of an alias file, even if it's broken and cannot be resolved.

If your alias is not broken, and you know it refers to a folder or disk, then you can ask the Finder to "open" the alias, and then "close Finder window 1" if you didn't want it open. At that point, the disk is mounted and the "original item" property can do its job.

If your alias refers to a file, the above probably doesn't help you.
