and then, using a completely different adjective, 'dead' and not 'extinct',
we can let it slide where
"John C. Welch" wrote:
> So does John Bonham and Hendrix, and they're just as dead
So, okay. (Even though extinct is not the same as dead. ;)
And then it was nice -- in a show of HyperCard and System 7 solidarity --
to read this, where
"David C Andrews" wrote:
>> Thanks for the plug for Hypercard! WhereI cut my scripting teeth many

But then, again, for some reason, which seems to be strangely struggling for
some obscure point, I read where
"John C. Welch" wrote:
> It's dead. Bullet in the brain. Get Revolution.
And now, dog-gone-it, I'm completely passed my "Oh, no, don't go there,
girl!" phase, and I just have say, in the name of All That Is HyperCard...
John,
We get that HyperCard is "dead" (your word), which I presume you mean "is no
longer being developed." I think we've all read the Top Secret memo and
have fully integrated the sad reality into our daily lives. ;)
That said, the original comment was "HyperCard is extinct", to which I
lovingly and joyfully reminded the OP that HyperCard was living quite
peacefully in all kinds of places, in all kinds of ways.
This is true, and it's one of those things that, I'm sorry to say John,
you'll just have to live with.
You may also have read this in the same Top Secret Memo:
"Aldus Corporation today announced the end of
development of the SuperPaint product line."
So sad. :-(
However, in case you were curious, I used SuperPaint last weekend to make a
scale drawing of my front porch.
I know, I know, I should have used KeyCad 1.0, but I seem to have misplaced
the 3.5" floppy that I had it on. (Hmmm...maybe I left that disk in the
shed, where I have a Classic set up near my table saw. If so, I'll bet the
squirrels have dropped walnut shells all over it and so I'll have to burn
another floppy. Dang.)
And so, in conclusion, I found this entry from the 6th Grade Argumentative
Essay Contest, which I think handily, and without a doubt, proves that, in
point of observed fact, HyperCard is neither extinct nor dead.
========================================
HYPERCARD is NEITHER DEAD NOR EXTINCT
by Sally ------- <Name omitted for privacy reasons.>
Ms. Neely, Grade 6
This is my essay assignment for Miss Neely, my favorite teacher. Our
assignment was to choose one of these sentences and then make an argument
(the good kind, not the bad kind like with my brother) for why that sentence
is True or False.
Tomatoes are fruits.
The sky is blue.
HyperCard is dead and extinct.
Willy Wonka was an over-rated candy advertisement designed to
support a multi-billion dollar global market in corn syrup,
probably funded by Cuban sugar cartels.
Puppies are not not cute.
For my essay, I chose number three, about HyperCard. (I was going to choose
the one about the Johnny Depp movie, but frankly, Ms. Neely, the notion that
a movie could really be used as a means to sell more candy is just so silly,
on its premise, that any argument seems banal.)
For the "Discuss your approach to the problem question", I chose to use the
"What is the definition of the word?" kind of approach, which is where you
look up the definition of a word and then see if that is true or false,
compared what your sentence says. You are supposed to say the opposite of
your sentence, and then try to see if that is true or not. If it is, then
your sentence must not be. That is why we call it the "Scientific Method"
and it is a method used in science, which can be many things, not only
boiling stuff. (Just ask my dad, because he always says "There's a science
to that." and so you see what I mean.)

H1 - Hypothesis: HyperCard is Extinct.
ex·tinct adj
1. having no members of the species or family in existence, as is the
case with many organisms known only from fossils
H1: fails
2. having died out or ceased to exist
H1: fails
3. no longer active or likely to erupt
H1: fails
4. no longer valid or practiced
H1: fails
5. extinguished, quenched, or no longer burning
H1: fails
Therefore, HyperCard is not extinct.
H2 - Hypothesis: HyperCard is dead.
dead adj
1. having passed from the living state to being no longer alive
H2: fails
2. never having been alive and having none of the characteristics of a
living thing
H2: fails
3. having no living things, or unable to support life
H2: fails
HC could control our fish tank thermometer if we were absent for an extended
period, therefore HyperCard is able to support life ;)
4. having lost normal sensitivity to touch or pain, for example, from the
effects of cold, disease, or anesthesia
H2: fails
5. unable or unwilling to respond to, understand, or appreciate something
H2: fails
6. showing little indication of feeling or vitality
H2: fails
7. having the appearance of a dead person
H2: fails
8. without human activity or anything interesting or entertaining
H2: fails
9. no longer in use, or no longer relevant, appropriate, or important
H2: fails
10. no longer able to operate because of a fault, breakdown, or loss of
power
H2: fails
11. no longer burning or able to burn
H2: fails
12. not resonant, or producing sounds that are not resonant
H2: fails
13. unbroken by any sound or movement
H2: fails
14. sudden, abrupt, and complete
H2: passes
15. precise or exact in position or character
H2: passes
16. very tired or completely without energy (informal)
H2: fails
17. certain to face a very unpleasant fate (informal)
H2: fails
18. producing or yielding no return
H2: fails
19. used to describe a ball that has crossed the boundary of the playing
area in some games
H2: fails
20. used to describe a golf shot in which the ball comes to rest so close
to the hole that the next shot cannot miss
H2: fails
Therefore, because even if two things out of 20 pass, there are 18 that
fail, and so that is more and therefore HyperCard is not dead.
I hope I do well on this essay, because Ms. Neely is my favorite teacher.
The End
