Indeed - I don't know why dragging it out didn't seem to have an immediate impact the first time. Maybe I didn't quit and relaunch Script Editor as I thought I had.

I just confirmed that this script behaves as expected (displays the on error dialog) when I don't have the "FFT" osax installed:

try
    «event XPLAFFT1» {1.0, 1.0, 1.0}
on error
    display dialog "No FFT!"
end try
