I don't know; that's how I copied it. It's not in Bartlett's, so I googled it. It's been attributed both to Hale and to Helen Keller. (It's not in Bartlett's under her name either.) The overwhelming majority of the quotes, by either of them, have the semicolon. Only a few have a comma there.

Oh, and I did fix the typo; I had to reread the sentence five times before finding it, though.
