AppleScript numerics may be an exception to that:

Integers are limited to 30 bits rather than the usual "int" and "unsigned int" declarations which are 32 bits in most Macs though 16 and 64 bit ints are also in captivity..

Given the sparsely documented difference in integers it is understandable that users might conclude that similar liberties are being taken in floating point without explanation.

I don't think it's so, but then I have never figured out exactly what the missing integer bit is used for either.
