Indeed, any osax or application can define and use its own custom AE types. But without proper standardisation [by Apple], such schemes are probably going to remain vendor-specific and you lose one of the main reasons/advantages of using AEs in the first place. Hence the suggestion to interested parties to file a feature request and get it nailed down properly.
