So my newbie question is pretty straightforward: is there a more
elegant way to write hashbang-enabled AppleScripts (or, more
generally, osascripts)?
The cases where a UNIX executable calling osascript is more
convenient than a standard AppleScript applet are quite rare: why
wouldn't you use a standard applet?
That's what you get when you select "as application" when saving in
Script Editor.
