There's good stuff to be found here occasionally, and I have no desire to be a PITA. Ten years as a university administrator, six of them as a Dean, left me with a pretty thick skin and a penchant for plain talk, so just tell me what's bugging you.
It's not a closed club; not by any stretch of the imagination. It's only that some people consider "top posting" (which means putting your reply above the text to which you are replying) to be bad netiquette (it makes it harder to follow the discussion's chronology if you have a stack of top posted replies).
The normal way it's done here is to splice in your response below the thing to which you are responding. If there's a question, open a bit of space and answer directly below it, and do so through the rest of the message. As for what to trim, you can safely delete things that aren't relevant as the thread goes forward. You can delete any sigs and long winded disclaimers that are in peoples messages. You can delete whatever doesn't contribute to someone following the drift of the discussion. It's no more complicated than that. Even a former Dean can understand it. ;-)
As for analyzing the other paragraph, Gary will have to explain what he meant. I won't try to second guess him. :-)
