July 4, 1776 -> 2369915.5
Aug 16 2006 -> 2453973.5

The julian date changes at noon, a time when astronomers were usually asleep. There is also Modified Julian Date that changes at midnight and is used by the US military.

It's interesting that AppleScript has apparently chosen to allow negative numbers for date/time values. Microsoft Excel uses floats with a unit of days that start counting at Jan 0, 1904. They don't allow negative numbers and I could never figure out why.

And the site above says the change to Gregorian was in October of 1582 for Roman Catholic countries and 1752 for America.

I, for one would like to know just what AppleScript uses internally. There is also a 64 bit integer super epoch time floating around. It may be OS dependent.
