download and convert favicons

Does anyone out there have an example on how to download and convert favicons from the web?

I am just starting out on an app that records URLs, and it would be nice to have the favicon that go with the site, rather than just the dull text. I have seen a few different coco applications out there that do this internal to what they are doing, but I am looking for something I can do with relative ease.

I started down the road of doing a quick shell script to "curl" or "wget" the icon, but that seems a little funky to me. I dug for a while on the net, but did not find an example script. Any help would be great. I will eventually want to convert the icons into jpegs or pngs, so any advice there would be welcome as well :).
