Echoing a previous poster, arbitrarily entering an IP on an active machine could be a problem. If this is the case, I'd suggest a few functions to test the IP address: check ARIN or relevant WHOIS for its validity (using do shell script), check that the IP is not already claimed (can also be done with do shell script - issue a ping , then check the response), etc.
