Michelle may have overlooked one step that is required: you need to specify that the resulting program should run at start-up as one of your log-in items.
You can set this in Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts tab - > Login Items.

At present my mac starts up, the script editor opens my script and
from there it is waiting for me to hit "Run".
is there anyway i can make the script run on opening.

Save the script as an application. Make sure the "Startup screen"
check box is not checked when you save.
