BOSTON APPLESCRIPT USER GROUP "BAUG" MEETING
The Boston AppleScript User Group will be meeting on Tuesday,
January 24 at MIT Building E51, Room 372 located at the corner of
Wadsworth and Amherst Streets one block off Memorial Drive.
This month's meeting will be a discussion and demonstration of a couple
of short scripts that combine within them the use of Perl, Unix shell
scripting, and the XMail osax to build a very cool solution to a couple
of well known issues.
First, if you use Retrospect you may not be aware of this issue- if
Retrospect is unable to complete a scheduled backup then all future
scheduled backups are cancelled without notice. Suppose you run backups
overnight and suppose you have a power interruption during the backup
then you might be vulnerable to this issue. You might not even be aware
that you had a power outage and you may go on changing your backup media
on schedule not knowing there's no backup taking place...it happens.
Another issue is the lack of reporting by OS X when a mirrored drive
fails. The only way to know is to check it manually using the Disk
Utility application or its command line counterpart diskutil.
Tonight we'll build an AppleScript solution to the above issues. We'll
use AppleScript's "do shell script" command to get the information we
need, we'll use XMail osax to email the reports, and we'll use cron to
schedule this to occur on a regular basis.
These are short but powerful scripts and make for a good introduction to
the technologies they use. Beginners are encouraged to attend this
meeting and bring your questions.
NOTE- next month we change rooms to E51-345.
