I have been searching for a way to clear a menu item.

The code you seek Grasshopper is ...

tell application "System Events" to tell process "Finder" to click menu item "Clear Menu" of menu "Recent Folders" of menu item "Recent Folders" of menu "Go" of menu bar item "Go" of menu bar 1

One web sites to view is '<http://www.apple.com/applescript/uiscripting/03.html>'. Scroll to the 'Selecting a Sub-menu Item' section.
