The OP's supplied code worked as is OMM in both Excel X and Excel 2004. (And
I don't have any third-party scripting additions that would do silent
coercion.)
Excel X's dictionary doesn't say what the "open" command wants, but the
"save" command says it expects "the file or alias in which to save the
object". On that basis, I would conclude that aliases are acceptable,
especially since they work here.
Andy's Excel setup may have some problems. One place to start is dumping the
application prefs (/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Excel.prefs.plist in the user's
preferences folder) and rebooting.
