Hi,

We released Smile 3.1.5 and the associated osax, XMLLib.osax, Satimage.osax, and Numerics.osax, in a Universal Binary version, for Tiger only [1]. The release notes [2] list 50+ new features.

Smile 3.1.5 took some time to release publicly. This is because Smile 3.1 introduces three major new features.

1/ Utility windows.
Smile can now run a utility window, that is a palette which displays over all applications' windows, transparently for the user, that is without displaying Smile's menu bar [3]. Smile can detect application switches, so the utility window can be set to show only in the application(s) you want.

2/ Remote debugging.
If you install Smile-based applications in your clients' machines - rather than applets or AppleScript Studio applications - you can now debug and service them remotely: your Smile can control the client's Smile.

3/ Web applications.
Smile can now handle cgi requests [4] (the cgi is included.) You can make your Mac OSX into a server of web applications in little time, writing only html, javascript and AppleScript. You can design simple as well as complex and powerful applications: synchronous or asynchronous behaviors can be installed.

Smile (even the regular version) now includes a Web suite and web browser windows. Compared to other web apps development environments, I think that Smile server is much faster to debug and easier to write, and it includes a unique graphic generation environment.

Examples of web applications and of remote Smile-to-Smile connexion, and the required material, are provided in the full version of Smile.

The first public services running over Smile server are scientific applications, see for instance:

The remote server features require a paid license ($49 a year, or $145 unlimited.)
Free trial licenses, valid 2 months, are available on the site.

Thanks for your attention,
Emmanuel
