Yet another way around this problem might be to use something like MacDrive (http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/). It is a little app that lets your PC read HFS volumes.
I found this to be the perfect tool to get my dad's PC to be able to share his Mac formatted external drive. There are probably a number of other shareware options out there, but this one worked for me.
