Nothing is lost of "the file" as most humans conceive it -- only of

This is, for all the reasons in caps and *asterisks* in the original message,
exactly untrue.

Too cryptic for me. I'll pass.

Strictly speaking, you were correct -- if the data is not needed or desired, then it's safe to destroy it. The problem is that you [1] may not know whether or not you need or want it, either because you don't know what it is, or perhaps you don't know that you want it *yet*. Therefore, it's generally recommended that you leave them alone, instead of, as many people do, saying "ooo, ick, extra files!", running around deleting every one they can find, and then wondering why some of their files don't work quite the way they used to.

But, at least we can all rest assured that when moving a file from a Mac to
Windows, one can ditch any (all) "dot files" that mean nothing to the
Windows environment -- i.e., all of them.

Again, strictly correct. However, that assumes a one-way transfer. If, as the OP did, you had a flash drive and moved things the other way or simply had some files along for the ride, then you might have issues.

[1] That's the generic "you", not you in particular. You, of course, are far too intelligent and aware to ever make this mistake. [2]

[2] That's sarcasm. [3]

[3] That's not an insult. Everyone screws up eventually. The trick is to arrange things so it doesn't hurt (much) when you do.
