This actually happened. It was not a student, but a professor of philosophy
at a colleague's guest lecture. It happened in the 1950s. (May have happened
spontaneously elsewhere too, I suppose but this one is documented.) The man
died last year, and the story was told on NPR. I've forgotten his name, the
place was New York. I'm googling at the moment to track it down, but it's
kind of difficult to get a handle on it without the name... (just got
another apocryphal story about a Scottish "student" - this version quotes
"Aye. Right.")
