And probably dangerous. There can be multiple instances of processes with the same name, but ids are unique. I think someone suggested something like this, but there seems to be a problem with the archives and I can't find it. So perhaps again ...

    do shell script the result & " &> /dev/null & echo $!"
    set processid to the result
