In case someone is interested, I share the short conclusion of a thorough program of compared testing of Image Events, ImageMagick, and Smile for making thumbnails of bitmap images.
ImageMagick's anti-aliasing algorithm is definitely more efficient: it makes a more beautiful image, and it makes it faster. For instance, characters remain legible even highly reduced.
Although calling ImageMagick involves making a terminal session (with do shell script), Image Events is 10% slower and Smile is 50% slower (doing that in Smile requires to make a window, which is time-consuming.)
If Apple could replace sips with imagemagick, we would have a better tool and a faster one.
Emmanuel
PS
In case someone is interested, Image Events is anyway not a solution for me. For me, it fails sometimes for no special reason that I find, and I have to force an error (like: get document 12222) to have it re-work correctly.
