I was hoping to use GUI scripting to read the value of various

that it's impossible.
Everything returns "System Events got an error:
NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4" errors.
Someone, please, tell me I wrong?
tell application "System Events"
tell application process "Finder" to set y to name of menu item 7
of menu 1 of menu bar item "View" of menu bar 1
display dialog y -- "Arrange By"
tell application process "Photoshop" to set y to name of menu item
7 of menu 1 of menu bar item "View" of menu bar 1
--should be "Zoom In"
--System Events got an error: NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4
end tell
You sure it's just called "Photoshop", Irwin? What does this give you?

tell application "System Events" to name of first application process
whose name contains "Photoshop"
