AppleScript is the tool of choice for communicating with GUI applications. When a GUI app is not appropriate Do Shell Script is a way in. The idea that somehow accessing applications or tools that are the stuff that makes OS neXt work - underneath - is artificial and somehow insufficiently pure is nonsense.
I see AppleScript as an way, using osascript, from a shell or perl script, to talk to those dumb GUI applications which won't support instructions from a command line the way a "pure" program should.
