Thanks for the review, Paul; much appreciated. On the strength of
that I'll order the new edition (just as I'm willing to pay for upgrades
to software I like). I'm not a fan of online editions - I prefer to read
real paper books.

"AppleScript The Definitive Guide second edition"
is available from Powell's, although not from Amazon.

It is available from Amazon; it's just not properly listed (they call it the
"large print" edition!) m.

I enjoyed the first edition immensely, and learned a lot of AppleScript basics by reading it several times.

How has the second edition changed, and are the
changes sufficient to warrant purchasing again?

If you follow the links to the book at oreilly.com, and thence to "Read It Online" at http://safari.oreilly.com/?XmlId=0596102119, you have 14 days to peruse the new edition in its entirety for free and compare it to the edition you have. This is what Matt says in the Preface about the second edition:

"This second edition is written entirely from the perspective of Tiger. Not much attention has been paid to differences between the Tiger version of AppleScript and earlier versions. Where a feature is new in Tiger, I say so. But if you are still using Panther (or Jaguar), you should stick with the first edition of this book."

and in the Acknowledgments:

"With this second edition I have produced the version of this book I would
have preferred all along but failed to produce the first time around, owing
to limitations of time and to my own sheer ignorance. (Sorry about that; the
same thing happened with my REALbasic book, which required a second edition
in order to achieve its proper form.) The presentation has been heavily
reorganized, nearly every paragraph has been thoroughly rewritten, many
facts about AppleScript that were misapprehended or left in doubt in the
first edition have been at last sussed out and presented definitively and
correctly, and of course everything has been thoroughly updated to reflect
Tiger and other innovations two years on. I have also (as I did for the
second edition of my REALbasic book) written the index myself."

Sounds well worth it to me... See for yourself online.
