Thanks to Philip and Deivy for their replies. They show that my result
isn't standard, even on another PPC machine with the same OS. Following a
hunch, I've just restarted without Jon's Commands installed and am now
getting the {«script»} result too. Apparently, I've been experiencing a
late fling of Jon's Coercions, though I can't see what would inspire a
script-to-text coercion here.

So now I must retract some advice I gave on Macscripter.net yesterday.
