currently using is still on 10.4.6 - which probably explains our
different experiences.
Nope. It's that I didn't check for the value sticking across a
restart (because I manually reset it back to my original setting)
after running the script. So it really is a bug:

Can you duplicate?
For this particular job, though, I'd personally still opt for the
rather less obtrusive shell approach that I suggested previously -
or even a Property List Suite equivalent:
Yes, I agree and personally I prefer those techniques because they
are more portable across scripting languages. My main interest here
was the slider functionality because so far, I haven't used them in
my own code or in scripting and examining Apple's approach can be
informative for AX... in general.
