Well, these are 2 different words, not one, so 'it' is unclear. :)
There is the verb [to duplicate] and the noun [a duplicate].
Each is pronounced differently.
I will duplicate [v] that dance move.
--> long 'a', as in 'date'
This is a duplicate [n] of the original.
--> short 'a' (eh) , as the vowel sound in 'heavy'
See. Perfectly logical. 8-/
