Forgive me but I simply can't resist it.
You are probably better off than most natives of the US of A. AppleScript is "English-like" according to the official word from Cupertino. That is quite different from "follows English syntax rules". Americans have more to un-learn than you.
Stop trying to equate AppleScript with the English language and think of it as learning something new - like perl - and you'll be better off. Don't ever try to guess a new-to-you syntax by trying a familiar series of English words. It never works.
