mailbox list visible

What I want to do is to show the mailbox list at the left of a message viewer window. Mail's dictionary has a 'mailbox list visible' property of a message viewer which indicates I should be able to write ...

set mailbox list visible of message viewer index 1 to true

But all I get is NSInternalScriptError. This looks like a big bad bug, but I'm wondering if anyone has had success with some form of this command.
