Thomas, try keeping the whole shooting match in Unicode text. Remove
the 'as string' coercions...
set current_song to (name of current track) as string
set current_artist to (artist of current track) as string
... replacing the statements with something like:
----------------
set {name:current_song, artist:current_artist} to current track
----------------
Then try to open the file using Unicode (UTF-16) encoding - or to
read it with:
----------------
read file file_location as Unicode text
