The AppleScript Language Guide is incomplete and out of date. I also cannot find a discussion of pipes there, at least not under Expressions/Variables, where it ought to be. Matt Neuburg's "AppleScript: The Definitive Guide", 2nd Edition is up-to-date for Tiger and should be considered the quasi-official documentation. It's all in there. It also has an excellent index. If you look up "pipes", you're directed to "vertical bars (|)" which has several (7) sub-headings including "variable names", p.107, that has everything you could want to know about this.
I'm sure that some of the other AppleScript books also have the details, but Matt's book, being devoted totally to the language, is the place to look. Yes, it's a shame that Apple has not made their own documentation complete and up-to-date, but you can safely consider Matt's book as the de facto documentation.

Hi,
Just helping out with the applescript grammar in Textmate [1] and we've come across some undocumented features (in the help docs at least.)
First one is the constant | where you can use | to create a variable out of anything, even if its some other terminology.
example:
set |set| to "foobar"
return |set|
I've found some release notes that cover the pipe variable thing, and define some other stuff [2][3], but I was just wondering if anyone knew of any documentation covering |word| at all.
