The test script addresses Finder so I don't think Rosetta is

If the script was compiled on a PowerPC based Macintosh and run on

No, he pasted it into script editor, according to his last message.
But that's apparently not the issue in this situation.
I ran a number of test scripts, and discovered that the problem is
with accessing "current date" within a Finder block. Other repeats
within the Finder block run normally, as does "current date"
outside any Finder block.
You're having that issue too? Mine works fine...
It's generally not a good idea to make calls to OSAXen within any
tell block.
