Funny! It may also have to do with convenience...

I was in Africa a few years ago, and got irked by people calling me
"Madame", as I was both young and unmarried. I asked them to call me
Mademoiselle.

After awhile I decided I'd rather be called Madame (and be treated
with a bit more respect) than fend off marriage proposals...
