I think that's the key; similar constructs work in other apps, even in whose
clauses.

Which ones? While it'd be technically possible, I'm not aware of any applications that understand references to properties and elements of non-application objects (strings, lists, records). It's normally left to users to retrieve a copy of the value from the application first, then use AppleScript to manipulate its properties and elements there.
