Right. It's not ASCII. It's MacJapanese. But the AppleScript functions to go back and forth between characters and their numeric representation are still called "ASCII character" and "ASCII number of".

I'm still surprised that you have to use a 0x80 to get a backslash to
work in a shell command in the Japanese locale.  I thought those
commands ignored locale settings...
