>me> Again, this thread seems interminable. If it's putting you to sleep, please
skip it.
>>mark>> Yet you keep refusing to terminate it.
I can't terminate any discussion nor would I.
I could simply not participate and not respond, but I felt some comments
deserved a response.
>>has>>AppleScript's success is based on three things: 1. it's been
included as standard since OS 7.5; 2. it was for years the only free
language available with really good application scripting support; 3. the
English-like syntax attracts certain groups of users who are put off by
more traditional languages.
Point 2 is incorrect. From the moment AppleScript was released Frontier
became a free program and had good application support.
Point 3 is the same point I've been making. Those users, who are, as you
say, put off by more traditional languages, can be lost to scripting, if
force fed (my pejorative term) shell scripting on the only source for
interactive appleScript support.
>>has>>Completely subjective" my foot. These and other long-standing
deficiencies are responsible for a significant portion of "how do I do this?"
traffic on this and other forums over the years.
Subjective: "lousy" "not decent" "Toy" etc. etc.
Your arguments carry much more weight when you stick to the objective.
Also, I'd say we're getting more and more "who do I shell script this?"
questions on this list.
>>has>>When the shell scripters here start peddling inferior solutions out of
religious zealotry or willful ignorance, you'll be welcome to insult them
freely - and I'm sure I and others will be happy to join in.
I don't believe I've insulted anyone in this thread or on this list. Can you
say the same? Can Mark?
I do regret that my Wizard of Oz analogy didn't go over as intended, but I
don't believe it was insulting. It certainly wasn't intended to be.
>>>Bowing out of this discussion now, as I have other things to be getting on
with. (Such as shipping the Ruby appscript beta, woot!!!)
Good luck with that.
I'm hoping to bow out too, but I don't regret participating in this thread.
I think it triggered a cathartic and emotional response in some that may
have been a bit surprising. Who knew that there was such hostility?
If I was king of the forest I would have apple start an AppleScript new user
support list.I probably won't complain as much on line about shell scripting
evangelists, and I hope that more AppleScripters will offer the appropriate
AppleScript language solution, particularly for new users.
