I find the * sigl in perl useful for setting up keys based on the first line of a tab-separated text file. It is common to have the first line contain names for the columns. When writing a generalized module to support a variety of column arrangements you don't know the names but a user of the module does.
Actually that's the way the export structure works deep inside of perl.
This discussion has pointed out that such things are, in fact, possible in AppleScript.
