Hey Patrick, it will speed it up if you add an exit repeat after this line:
set the end of item 2 of item y of occourancesList to x
exit repeat

On myMac it processed a list of 11000 items with many duplicates in less than 4 mins.

If speed is a major consideration there are things that could improve performance. 

You could use script objects to handle the list processing. (Ia search of the archives would reveal some good techniques).

There are also Scripting Additions and applications that may run a bit faster. (Text Commands, etc.)
