I think Bruce was reading a bit much into my statement.   All I meant
was that it's always possible to open and manipulate files without
involving the application, whether the format is binary or XML or
whatever, and the fact that you can do it doesn't mean the application
is therefore scriptable, and scriptable applications is what this
thread is about. :)

Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

In general, yes, such shenanigans will require reverse-engineering the
file format.   I have nothing to say about how easy or even possible
it is to do something useful with Numbers's XML files, since I don't
have iWork.
