And you are right!
It is not Leopard related. I tried it in Leopard and got an error on
my script.
So, there might be a bug in 10.5(.1) for intel Macs.
I can only confirm that reading small reals works fine in my
machine, OS X
10.4.11 ;-)

By the way, on my previous post I wrote:
tell app "Smile"
set y to read binary x as small integer with big endian
...
I just realized it is the Satimage OSAX that has the command, so no
need to appeal to Smile.
set y to read binary x as small integer with big endian
will suffice if one has Smile.
