I have never gotten a single Mail rule script to work without causing
application problems that soon require a reboot. This is true for
Tiger on G3, G4 and Intel Duo 2 systems. And it occurs even if I have
totally empty run handlers in my Mail rule script!
I was hoping with Leopard the problem would be fixed but get this: On
a completely virgin Leopard system Mail had a thread bomb as soon as I
tried using a Mail rule script. The Mail application itself started
stalling and eventually any other apps I tried to launch stall as well.
-------------------------
Here's the details:
Generated a completely virgin Leopard installation
Booted the new system and started Mail
Set up my Pop account
Set the single default Mail rule to execute Apple's own Mail rule
script example at
/Library/Scripts/Library Scripts/Mail Scripts/Rule Actions/Sample Rule
Action Script.scpt
Sent myself a simple test message
Bingo - The mail rule showed a dialog box which was screwed up -
the buttons and text were half way off the right side of the dialog
box and truncated at its edge. Soon Mail stopped reacting completely.
I tried running some other apps but they froze shortly after launch
I opened console and it showed a Mail thread had done a misaligned
malloc free which had terminated the thread.
------------------------
Each of my many attempts to use a Mail rule over the past few years
has necessitated a reboot. (I never tried just logging out and back in
again because I didn't trust the system's integrity at that point.)
The symptoms vary so it would seems some random clobbering is going
on. With the sample Apple Mail rule script sometimes a dialog box gets
displayed and sometimes no Mail rules ever execute. At times it seems
to work at first use but then the application stalls start happening
the second time the Mail rule script is run.
Hopefully someone at Apple will pick up on this problem.
